Climbing Fort Louis: Views, Iguanas & Rich History | Saint Martin 🇫🇷
On our Saint Martin trip, we decided to begin our French-side adventure with a climb up Fort Louis in Marigot. What we didn’t realize was that this “quick stop” would give us one of the most breathtaking views of the entire island and a memory we’ll be talking about for years.
Our first stop on the French side of Saint Martin?
Fort Louis in Marigot.
And let me tell you… we hadn’t even started climbing yet and the view was already showing off.
The Climb Up
Fort Louis sits high above Marigot, which means one thing: stairs. Lots of stairs.
We stood at the base looking up, already catching glimpses of turquoise water and red rooftops below. Before the first real step, we were already saying, “Check out this view!”
The climb isn’t impossible, but it does remind you that vacation cardio is still cardio. By the time we were halfway up, we were pausing for “picture breaks” that were definitely not just breathing breaks. 😄
But every few steps rewarded us with something better than the last.
When we reached the top, it all made sense.
A 360° Caribbean Masterpiece
From Fort Louis, you get a full panoramic view of the island. You can literally see:
The French side spread out beneath you
The Dutch side in the distance
The marina and port below
Endless blue stretching into the horizon
It’s one of those places where you just slowly turn in a circle and realize you’re standing in the middle of something special.
There’s something surreal about standing in one place and seeing two countries at once. Saint Martin/Sint Maarten really is one island with two personalities, and from up there, you feel that blend.
History in the Air
Scattered around the fort are old cannons and stone walls, some weathered and damaged with time. You can almost imagine what it must have been like centuries ago when this fort was used to defend the island.
It’s not just a scenic stop. There’s history layered into the rocks.
And then… nature decides to steal the show.
The Iguana Committee 🦎
Right there along the walls, a lineup of iguanas basking in the sun like they owned the place. They were casually strolling, freezing mid-step, not even budging despite our presence. If you’re from Trinidad & Tobago, you already know the joke. Let’s just say… they’d have a different destiny back home. 😅 But here, they were living their best French-Caribbean life.
The Moments That Make It Worth It
One of our favourite parts was just standing together at the top, soaking it all in. Ocean breeze, breathtaking views. Two nations in one frame. And of course, capturing those little candid moments that make family travel what it is. Saint Martin has this effortless beauty. You don’t have to search for it. You just climb a few stairs and it unfolds in front of you.
Where To Next?
After Fort Louis, we were ready for the next mission: more driving, more beaches, more exploring the French side. Because when you’re on an island like this, you don’t rush it. You wander it. And Fort Louis was the perfect way to begin.
